(Cumaná, current Venezuela, 1795 - Sierra de Beríritu, Colombia, 1830) Venezuelan military and politician. A member of a Venezuelan patrician family with a long military tradition at the service of the Spanish Crown, his father, Lieutenant Colonel Vicente Sucre y Urbaneja, nevertheless adhered to the emancipatory cause from the beginning. Educated by his uncle José Manuel, at the age of fifteen he enlisted in the patriot army as a second lieutenant of engineers and participated in Miranda's campaign (1812) against the royalists, during which he was promoted to lieutenant. After the failure of this first emancipatory attempt, he took refuge on the island of Trinidad, where he made contact with Mariño, whom he followed in 1813 in the expedition to reconquer Venezuela, in which he took Cumaná and intervened in the organization of the army of the East. . His courage and his skills for war determined his promotion to lieutenant colonel, and as such he took part in the offensive on Caracas. However, his army defeated in Aragua and Urica, he had to flee so as not to be captured by the royalists. Once again integrated into the fight, in the second half of 1815 he actively participated in the defense of Cartagena de Indias, from where he went on to fight in Guayana and the lower Orinoco. With the rank of brigadier general, he marched in 1818 to Angostura, where Simón Bolívar had installed his headquarters and organized the Republic. There he became one of his best lieutenants and earned the friendship and respect of the Liberator, who always emphasized his military skills and his elevated sense of morality. Sent to the Antilles with the mission of obtaining arms for the army, he entered the Mariño staff upon his return, who was fighting in eastern Venezuela; Later he went to Bolívar's staff and was appointed member of the commission that signed the armistice and the regulation of the war of Santa Ana de Trujillo (1820) with the realist general Pablo Morillo, by which it was intended to avoid as much as possible the effects of the war on the civilian population. The following year, he marched at the head of an army in support of the uprising in Guayaquil, a port where General San Martín's troops also arrived. Then began the Ecuadorian liberation campaign, which culminated in Pichincha, a battle fought in 1822. With this victory of Sucre, the independence of Gran Colombia was consolidated, that of Ecuador was consummated and the way was clear for the liberation of Peru, after the resignation of San Martín. Sucre entered Lima in 1823, preceding Bolívar, who took all the powers in the country. He participated with him in the battle of Junín and, on December 9, 1824, he defeated Viceroy La Serna in Ayacucho, an action that meant the end of Spanish rule on the South American continent. The Peruvian Parliament appointed him Grand Marshal and General-in-Chief of the armies. At the head of these he marched to Upper Peru, where he proclaimed the Republic of Bolivia in homage to the Liberator, whom he commissioned to draft his Constitution. The local Assembly named him president for life, but he resigned in 1828 as a result of riots and pressure from Peruvians opposed to Bolivian independence. He then retired to Ecuador accompanied by his daughter and his wife, the Marchioness of Solanda. Shortly after, he came to the aid of Colombia, invaded by the Peruvian José de la Mar, whom he defeated at Portete de Tarqui. After the signing of the Piura treaty, he went to Bogotá as a delegate from Ecuador before the Congress that met there, at a time when Greater Colombia was already in the process of disintegration. He was part of the commission in charge of negotiating with General Páez, who took up arms for the independence of Venezuela. Shortly after, Ecuador also declared it, and was heading there to avoid it, when in the Sierra de Beríritu he fell victim to an ambush, apparently ordered by José María Obando, the military chief of the Pasto province.
